Making the Mortises
Before drilling the mortises in the seat I turned tenons on the end of the legs. These are 1 inch diameter round, turned with a flat faced scraper. |
Before drilling the mortises I made some test holes at different angles to see how it would effect the stance of the stool. I decided to use 13 degrees front to back and 10 degrees side to side. |
I made a table at 13 degrees and screwed this to my drill press table. The table was then tilted by 10 degrees to drill the holes (don't forget to alter the tilt to 10 degrees the other side of vertical for two of the mortises) |

Using a one inch forstner bit I drilled the holes. Time to fit the legs. |
The next step is to make the back. Here's my home-made steam box. |
Cut out a piece of one inch square stock with straight grain. Then profile it. Pop it in the steam box for an hour and a half. |

Here is the form. |

But upon bending it split badly. As did the following two attempts. |
