To celebrate completing my new workshop my next project is a decent shop stool. Somewhere to park your backside whilst sipping a cup of coffee and thinking about the next move. I was inspired by a friends recent Windsor chair so this stool will incorporate a bow back and a deeply sculpted seat. Let's start.....

Stock Preparation
I have chosen Ash for the legs and Cherry for the seat and spindles. |
The legs are ripped on the bandsaw to 1 3/4 square and 32 inches long. The seat blank is made from two pieces of cherry, 12 inches long by 7 inches. |
We need to glue the two pieces of cherry to make a seat blank. Plane one face flat... |
and then shoot the edges square. |
Test for fit-a nice tight joint. |
Glue up the blank. |
Mount a leg blank on the lathe and rough out to a cylinder. |
Taper the leg to a pleasing taper then measure the leg at intervals so you can duplicate the shape on the other legs. |
Draw out the outline of the seat... |
Clamp up the seat and.. |
carve away! |

Seat carved. Next the mortises for the legs. |
