Shop Stool

To celebrate completing my new workshop my next project is a decent shop stool. Somewhere to park your backside whilst sipping a cup of coffee and thinking about the next move. I was inspired by a friends recent Windsor chair so this stool will incorporate a bow back and a deeply sculpted seat. Let's start.....

Stock Preparation

Preparation-Mortises-Back

I have chosen Ash for the legs and Cherry for the seat and spindles.

The legs are ripped on the bandsaw to 1 3/4 square and 32 inches long. The seat blank is made from two pieces of cherry, 12 inches long by 7 inches.

We need to glue the two pieces of cherry to make a seat blank. Plane one face flat...

and then shoot the edges square.

Test for fit-a nice tight joint.

Glue up the blank.

Mount a leg blank on the lathe and rough out to a cylinder.

Taper the leg to a pleasing taper then measure the leg at intervals so you can duplicate the shape on the other legs.

Draw out the outline of the seat...

Clamp up the seat and..

carve away!

Seat carved. Next the mortises for the legs.
