Off-Cut Box

While building the Krenov style cabinet I had some beautifully figured off-cuts that were too small to use, but too big to throw away. So I decided to make a small box, as a little practise using my LittleRat would also come in handy. The wood is spalted ripple sycamore.  April 2005

Lay out the stock and decide which parts will go where. Once happy with the grain patterns cut the pieces to size, ensuring the edges are square.
Layout the dovetails on the sides and cut them. I used my LittleRat router jig to cut mine, although you could cut them by hand if you wished.
Once the dovetails are cut assemble the box to check the fit.
Run grooves around the inside of the pieces to take the bottom. Be careful to stop the grooves so they dont show from the outside-as you can see I DIDN'T!! Ooops!
Fit the lid to the box, ensuring a nice snug fit. Clamp it in the final position and then drill a 4mm hole to take the brass rod that will act as a hinge.
