"Sam Maloof" Style Chair

I love Sam Maloof's chairs-beautiful, organic looking pieces that seem to be carved from a single piece of wood. Let's have a go at building a low back armchair similar to Sam's.

I have built a mock-up chair out of pine to finalise the design and construction techniques. Now its time to build the "real" one! Bring out the black walnut.....

Joint up the stock for the seat.......
test for fit and glue up....
two at a time....
then join them all together....
Glue squeeze out removed and ready to be squared up. There is a little sapwood and a knot-these I have put on the bottom face.
Laying out the parts on the walnut as templates....
and off to the bandsaw. That big plank is now a bunch of "not-so-big" pieces!
Time to layout for dado's and start shaping.
