Half Blind Dovetails
| Let try half blind dovetails. This is a little trickier to set up as both parts of the joint are cut using the same dovetail bit. The depth of the cutter affect the fit of the joint so test cuts must be made to achieve a perfect fit. Once happy with the fit, mark the setting in the manual for future reference and off we go. Fill the gaps between the fingers with the supplied plastic strip... |

| Then rout away..... |

| Set the pin board in place, using a front board to ensure it is perfectly lined up. Spin the fingers over, adjust to the correct mark on the scale and lock down. Rout using the same bit at the same depth. |

| And there we go-half blind dovetails, easy! |

| So after a quick
practise I'm ready to try it out in anger. I must say I was surprised at
how easy and quick it was to set up and use. The actual routing took only
seconds and with batch work this jig will be a boon! It is also very
simple to set out the fingers for the result you want-no messing around
with bevel gauges-just set it by eye! A backer board is essential though
if you want to avoid tear-out (a machining fact of life) The jig costs £235 and is available from www.brimarc.com Many thanks to Martin for the loan of the jig. |
