Hand Planes

These are my favourite tools! I have a mix of metal and wooden planes from all over the world. Take a look-

Back

Clifton #4,# 5 and #7

These are my main bench planes for smoothing and flattening stock. They are made in Sheffield, England to a very high standard and are competitively priced. I think the mix of polished metal, racing green laquer and bubinga handles gives the Cliftons a beautiful, purposeful look!

Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Jack

This is a very useful plane-the low bed angle of the #62 allows it to easily cut end grain. It excels on the shooting board and is useful for boards with tricky grain. Its extra weight over a block plane makes it useful when cleaning up large areas of end grain

HNT Gordon Smoother

This plane comes from Australian plane maker Terry Gordon. It is made form Iron wood, a tough Aussie timber. The blade is bedded at 60 degrees which allows you to plane timbers with interlocking grain WITHOUT tear-out! It certainly works like a dream, although you have to learn to set the iron using a hammer.

Steve Knight Smoother

This plane is made from maple and purpleheart with an ipe sole. The blade is bedded at 55 degrees and has some innovative features for a woodie. It is great on tropical timbers!

Weiss Scrub Plane

I bought this one from Pennyfarthing Tools in Salisbury. I'm not sure how old the plane is but it is definitely not new- I believe the patent printed on the front is over a hundred years old! I tuned it up a little and it cuts like a monster. It removes stock at a ferocious rate and is perfect for quickly flattening rough boards.

Lie-Nielsen Block Planes

I have two of these-both low angle. One is the adjustable mouth version, the other non-adjustable cast in bronze. These planes are a delight to use and perfect for all the little trimming jobs that come up. Leaves end grain shining like glass. You won't go wrong with either of these!

HNT Gordon Block Plane

This plane is made from macassar ebony and has the blade bedded at 55 degrees. The mouth is not as tight as I thought it would be but is has no effect on tool in use. It cuts effortlessly and is a lovely weight in the hand.

HNT Gordon Shoulder Planes

1 1/4 and 3/4 inch wide.

These tools are perfect for cleaning up shoulders of tenons and grooves and rebates. They are perfectly made and a joy to use. 3/4 is made from ebony, the 1 1/4 from figured budgeroo.

Record Compass Plane

Another "not quite new" tool! I purchased this from a tool seller at a car boot sale. It is in perfect condition-except all the paint is gone! Not a tool that gets a lot of use but very handy when you do.

Stanley #78 Rebate Plane

A very useful plane, probably the easiest of the rebate/multi planes to use. So simple to set up, its quicker than a router if you only have a small amount to do. This one came off Ebay and is in perfect condition.
