This one is made from Goncalo Alves - I made my first one the traditional way with hand chopped mortises - it didn't come out as cleanly as I wanted. And chopping skewed mortises is not fun without special tools!!
So this plane was made the laminated way - I cut all the mortises on the table saw and then glued the two halves back together. It worked out very well - very clean and well defined mortises. It also has the advantage of allowing you to make the wedges and see if they fit perfectly before you glue it up.
The depth stop is made from a piece of timber and is secured in place with a M6 nut, tapped directly into the timber. It works really nicely so I turned up a pretty brass knob to top it off. The skewed iron and the nicker iron were a little time consuming to make as they need to be very precisely dimensioned (slightly wider than the sole).
The plane works very well - a complete success! So I made a small video of it in use - my first go at a video so please be kind;)
